Sarah Register Smith, MEd, LPC

Sarah Register Smith is a native Texan who grew up in New Waverly and earned her undergraduate degree from Trinity University in 2000.  After working in the corporate world for a few years, Sarah returned to the Houston area and earned her Master of Education degree in Counseling from the University of Houston in 2004.

Sarah began working at Small Steps Nurturing Center, a model preschool program for children living in poverty, in 2003 as a practicum student under Dr. Forrester.  She continued working there as a Licensed Professional Counselor in the role of Social and Emotional Program Coordinator, providing individual play therapy, dyad sessions, parent coaching, and group play therapy to clients.  She also helped implement Dr. Forrester’s SET for Life program, training teachers, staff, parents, and volunteers in its use with young children.

After taking several years off to stay home with her children, Sarah returned to private practice.  In 2014 Sarah completed the Play Therapy course at DePelchin Children’s Center and became a Registered Play Therapist.

Sarah’s experience in school and private practice settings, as well as her own experience raising children, has helped inform her approach to working with children and their families.  Sarah believes that early intervention and collaboration with important people in the child’s life helps support a child’s social and emotional development and sets them up for future success.  Her approach is playful, positive, and supportive for both the child and their family.  There is no cookie-cutter approach to therapy, and Sarah will work to help find the best approach to meet the individual child’s needs.

In her spare time, Sarah enjoys reading, traveling, cooking, and spending time with her husband, four kids, and many pets.
